Several factors contribute to determining when and where an antique Dutch tile was made, including: the type of clay used, the thickness and texture of the tile — early tiles are usually thicker and rougher than later versions — the glaze, the subject of the design, and the maker’s marks. Rare tiles command the highest prices, but with few exceptions, the names of most historical ceramicists are unknown. The Dutch tile industry began in the 16th century in Antwerp, a thriving port with a diverse population that included many residents from other countries, including potters from Italy.
Their work included tiles in vivid colors of blue, green, purple, yellow-orange and an orange-like brown. Each individual tile surface displayed a design that was part of a larger pattern consisting of four or 16 tiles. These brightly colored tile patterns were used to decorate floors and walls in a polychrome design. Blue and white corner motifs appeared in the Dutch tiles, and these combined to form secondary patterns in large tile installations.
Early in the 17th century, the demand for tiles increased as successful merchants built houses with large fireplaces that were often covered with tile. The imports influenced Dutch designs as local potters attempted to imitate the Chinese ceramics. The first blue and white tiles appeared in Delft, where white earthenware tiles were decorated with Chinese-style blue designs. The oldest Delft tiles were formed from soft, red clay, while 17th and 18th century tiles consisted of yellowish or pale brown clay.
Both types of clay are soft enough to cut with a knife, yet tin-enamel bonded well with them, adding strength. The clay was rolled to a 1-centimeter thickness before a wooden template was used to mark and cut the tiles.

Dutch Delft tiles are a unique example of colonial Dutch art that was both decorative and practical in purpose. The tiles themselves were produced by rolling clay into slabs, firing the slabs, then applying a thick glaze. The scenes characteristic of these tiles depict images of animals, mythological creatures, and artifacts that were likely to have appeared in ordinary Dutch villages, such as windmills, houses or boats.
The tiles often portrayed different characters such as men, women, children, and even fishermen. Most of the tiles are colored blue to imitate the style of Chinese porcelain, which had become popular as a result of Dutch trade with China.

Blue and white are the colours most commonly associated with Delft tiles, however this is not always the case. The earliest tiles produced in the Netherlands, usually in the city of Antwerp, are often polychromatic.
The oldest examples date to the early 16th century. This move to a simpler colour scheme was inspired by Chinese porcelain, which first arrived in the region around 20 years before. The craftsmen best able to replicate the Chinese method were from the town of Delft — hence the name. Generally speaking, preth century tiles were made with red clay while later tiles are made with yellowish-brown clay. Prior to the templates used to cut the individual squares featured nail in the corners to hold the clay in place.

Today, many of the Delft pieces most commonly found in stores are of the tourist variety — sold for a quick buck without the true hallmarks of traditional Delftware.
